(no I am not a fan of Twighlight, but this place was beautiful! )

I went to Seattle, the Olympic Peninsula,Vancouver city, and Connecticut for two weeks, and am slowly getting back into the work/housework routine.
here are a few things I have been interested in lately...

picked up Revolutionary Road and read it cover to cover on my return flight. Haven't seen the film yet, but am always fascinated with 1950-60s genre (esp gender roles and of course the clothing!) . Can't wait for Mad Men's return!

i've been very into indian paisley's (loving this Beyond Vintage top from FP )

and woodblock prints (via material concern and more on the subject at design sponge )

it was my most lovely friend, Kris Chau's 30th b-day ! I got her one of these Cheng & Eng porcelain figurines to keep Yoda company on work desk ! I am obsessed with Cheng & Eng and conjoined twins all together. I am so psyched to go to Scott's medical school formal at the Mutter Museum , where the famous duo's death cast is on view!

I was so obsessed with Twiggy as a middle schooler; she was what made me want to become a fashion designer. At the time, I remember talking to my guidance counselor and being to embarassed to say that was what I wanted to do when I grew up because I thought it wasn't intellectual enough...I told him instead that I wanted to be an artist.

Anyway, it was about the time when I started to learn what the internet was, and I had some Twiggy fan site bookmarked and would just look at it all the time (the theme music was the Beatles "and your bird can sing"). I bought some Twiggy stuff off of ebay, including this original fan magazine

i'm sure my hair stylist loved it when I brought him this how to guide on Twiggy's haircut. I wanted mine exactly like hers.

ok I honestly wasn't into the whole MeowMiu, Year of the Cat trend as forcasted by Laia . I've never been a cat person and just didn't get it.
that was until Joey showed up...

we are not sure what his story is, but he started hanging out by our back door and was immediately cuddly and friendly. I noticed he was a bit chubby and when we finally got him a little box, we discovered he was already trained... we think he might have another home in the neighborhood.
I have so much love for this cat and though he hasn't let us take him in (he loves the great outdoors as much as his free kitty chow and tummy rubs) I think I understand what it means to love a cat.

I love short summer dresses and yearn to wear them all season long. Alas, I am cursed with cankles, so aside from the occasional maxi dress, I am subjected to wearing pants.
ugh...I've been searching hi and low for the perfect pant. Something comfy and cool (both figuratively and literally); no jeans (I have way to many!)

have you ever heard of the Dennis Severs' House in Spitafeilds, London? Severs refurbished the ten rooms of his house, each in a different historic style, mainly from the 18th and 19th centuries. The rooms are arranged as if they are in use and the fictitious Jervis family has only just left. Displays consist of items such as half-eaten bread and different smells and background sounds for each room. It is meant to be a sort of still life work of art allowing visitors to use their imagination to transport themselves into another time. The motto of the house is Aut Visum Aut Non!: 'You Either See it or you don't'. I definitely won't miss this the next time I visit London.

The crisis in Haiti hits close to home. My amazing mother had been planning to go to Haiti for months, and her trip was scheduled a few days after the earthquake hit. The hospital she was to stay in crumbled; we are so lucky she was not there.

There is probably no place on earth that was less prepared for such a major disaster than Haiti. If you can give anything, please do. Our collective effort can provide some of the much needed relief in a time of desperation.

I have always been a fan of Pyrrha. The are donating $40 from each sale of this Cherub talisman to Haitian relief efforts. The french inscription reads "Hope Remains Even in the Storm"

Months ago, Lizz posted about Miss Pettigrew lives for a day, a film I managed to never hear about when it was out in theatres. It finally arrived from netflixs and was really quite charming! I bought this new book at Petulia's Folly called Fashion at the Time of Fascism. Exploring Italian modernist fashion from the 1920s-40s under Mussolini's regime, you can tell a great deal of research went into this book. The images are really awesome, but I especially love the scaled down versions of various patterns from the era.

I sporadically read the New York Public Library' blog because they often have great fashion related postings. Recently, they posted about this book, Store Front: The Disappearing Face of New York about specialized family owned shops with unique old time charm in NYC that are sadly on their way to extinction. It makes me sad knowing that independent businesses cultivated by people that were passionate about their trade are being replaced by the homogenous walmarts and starbucks of the world!

Aloha! I know its been a while. I guess I've been lazy and unispired... well today, I found something truely exciting! These amazing mid century cork and chrome lamps. I don't have a photo of the ones I bought yet, but I googled extensively to make sure I got a good deal, and I am pretty sure I got them for at least $75 cheaper than the average. Plus, one of them is this super tall floor lamp which has an amazing svelt shape to it.

couldn't stick around NYC today cause it was way too hot & humid. nothing is worse than being in the subway on a day like today. all I could think about was being in my air conditioned room in Philly.

then I remembered summer days when I was a kid...

climbing trees, playing in the woods, eating popsicles, spitting out watermelon seeds to see who's went the furthest, picking wild berries and honeysuckle, swimming in my neighbor's pool 'till our lips turned purple.

we dreaded being called inside for dinner.

afterwords we would catch fireflies in jars and play capture the flag. on special nights like this one, we got to roast marshmallows over the grill.

I just bought some current/elliott jeans; man-o-man are these babies soft! I've had my eyes on them for a while, but with the $300 price tag it was a no-can-do situation. Until I majorly scored the other day and got the "suspender boyfriends" for a mere $90. The wash is just incredible...really; I could have slept in them. They have the perfect boyfriend fit- slouchy with a short enough rise to wear them low or high on my hips.

I checked out their site and died over their carnival inspired fall shoot. Makes me want to join the traveling circus.

it was one of the hottest and most humid days in Philly this summer. Ironically, we got our first shipment of fall clothing at Petulia's Folly and I'm not sure I'm ready for it.

Though, I was sifting through my old tear sheet book, one I've had since I was a junior in high school (1999) and remembered how much I love fall coats and jackets. I can't remember who designed some of these, or what magazines they've come from, but it would be fun to try and guess.

That's why I was so so psyched to see that he was nominated for the CFDA/Vouge's 2009 Fashion Fund. I so hope he wins and gains the kind of recognition his talent deserves.

I saw Food Inc. the other week and it really got me thinking. Where do the things I put in my body come from? Watch the movie, read your food labels, and you will find the answer is really disturbing. It inspired me to want to buy local, organic, and free range products. Not only for health sake, but also to preserve this beautiful earth and all its living things.

The movie got me thinking about all the things I consume and their impact on the environment. So while I was in Montreal, I visited Lemieux (their sight is not so attractive, and unless you can read french, its not so helpful) a store that makes eco-friendly bath and cleaning products right in the store. The products are contained in huge barrels and once you buy something, you bring back your containers for a refill. I bought lavender & goatsmilk and honeysuckle bodywash.

Yesterday I received an e-mail blast from Nylon magazine, which informed me of the Body Shop's new organic virgin coconut oil line. The oil is from a small organic coconut co-op in Samoa. On their site you can see interviews with some of the farmers who grow the coconuts. Knowing where this product came from, that there is so much care put into the ingredients, and that workers are paid fairly made me really want to stand behind the Body Shop's product. Reading about the companies values, made me want to support them even more. So, today I went in after work and purchased some soap bars!!!

As they say in Food Inc. every time you make a purchase, you are casting a vote. I know that even so called eco-friendly products still leave their carbon footprint on the planet, but I'll feel better "voting" towards positive change, even if small.

I ride Septa (philly's public transportation system) often. I always thought the M/F stickers on the passes were totally bogus. Why is it even necessary? On top of that, clearly it is discriminatory against non-gender conforming individuals. To me, it is equivalent to putting a race sticker on there...obviously Septa wouldn't go there.

I just received this petition in my inbox that aims to end the use of these M/F stickers. This is why you might want to sign it:

Septa's policy requiring M F stickers on weekly and monthly passes causes harassment to gender non-conforming people
creates a safety risk by alerting other passengers to a rider's difference
creates an economic hardship for passengers who are denied use of their pass and are forced to pay additional fare.
ending the use of M F stickers would reduce costs (right now SEPTA is using tax payer money to defend this policy)

I love Rachel Comey! I had the pleasure of meeting her last fall when I went to see her fall collection. What a sweetheart! I am soooo excited to get these boots in just a few short months. Yes, there has been a narrowing in the pay gap between men and women. Thanks to, in some part at least, bra burners.

The GAO, otherwise known as the "investigative arm of Congress," is an independent, non-partisan agency whose mission is to support Congress in meeting its constitutional responsibilites. They provide information that is objective, fact-based, nonpartisan, nonideological, fair, and balanced.

Here is a report on the pay gap in federal jobs, published on May 17th, 2009. It concludes that although the pay gap has narrowed from 28 cents to 11 cents on the dollar from 1988 to 2007, still 7 cents of that cannot be accounted for by measurable factors such as occupations of men and women, experience, and education level. This 7 cent gap is "unexplainable"

Because this gap is inexplainable, it does not confirm the existence of discrimination, but at the same time it does not dispute it.

Please understand this report, published less than three months ago, and tell me feminists are "fighting fights that have already been won."

How do I define feminism? Feminism is the idea that women should have the same rights and the same advantages as men. In other words, all humans should have the same rights and same advantages as one another.

How one can agree with this statement and not consider themselves a feminist, I do not understand. How one can buy into feminist STEREOTYPES, I do understand to a certain extent. To realize that it is a stereotype and still deny feminism is illogical.

I do agree that she is an amazing designer who thinks outside the box, but I wish she would think a bit more outside the box when it comes to making a statement like that.

Upon cleaning, I came across the project I did for FP when I first interviewed. It was called La Protege...it was about a french girl just out of college making her start in the world. Inspired by some of my muses at the time, like Francoise Hardy in particular.

I mounted many of the images on pages from a vintage copy of Honore de Balzac's La Peau De Chagrin....ironic?maybe now it is.

Our one year anniversary of living in our amazing apartment is closely approaching which makes me sad to think about how undecorated it is. Scott and I are truely such slobs and it really is a shame that we don't put more effort into making it feel like a more permanent space. But since we renewed the lease, my goal is to have have it all decorated by the end of August so I can throw myself a birthday party. Since we are both broke, we'll have to do it recession style. I started putting some special things in the wall in our bedroom....a mixture of my girlie things, photos of us, and few of Scott's 7"s to keep it from looking too feminine. My favorite is the Kodalith Scott made in 9th grade photo class...I still remember it hanging in the hallway of our junior high...it was my favorite one!

Sorry I haven't posted in a while. I guess I haven't been too inspired lately.

But the other day I became friends with Rachel Zoe on facebook and have been following her as she dresses people for the Met Gala. I don't really understand why some people dislike this woman, because I LOVE HER!!! Anyway, after reading about her getting all excited before and after the event, I got excited too! I had an event the other night for work, so I whipped up this dress.

I have a wedding to go to in about two weeks and I wanted to make something for it, but I know I don't have time to make it anything amazing, so this was kinda a version of something fancier I might want to wear to the wedding.

but after thinking how much I love what Rachel Zoe is wearing in her facebook profile pic, I remembered how easy it is to make a caftan. So, I am thinking I am going to make a dressier version for the wedding. I'll keep you posted.
