Terrariums

this christmas, I decided to make my friends terrariums. while doing a google search for some inspiration, I came across Paula Hayes, an artist who seems to concentrate on plants and other living things. The shapes of her terrariums make them so interesting. But a good ol' fish bowl also works well. I bought all of my cacti at IKEA so it was real cheap, too!

Christmas Presents

Santa brought me this:

available at La Garconne
And this:

available at jcrew

I'm back

Scott and I have never had real internet, we just kept jumping onto random signals we were getting. But I guess the neighbors figured it out and password protected. Thats why i've been MIA for a while. Anyway, Skottles Claus hooked up the internet for us and I plan blog away.

In the mood for...inspiration

I haven't felt inspired for a long long time. But, I did really like all of the beautiful cheongsams in the film I watched last night "In The Mood for Love." I didn't follow the story at all, but it didn;t matter because I mostly rented it for the way it looked. It pepped me up a bit.

I also like all of the beautiful washed out colors in Lina Scheynius's photos which i just discovered through Tavi's site.

Persian Rug

Ever since I stayed at Hotel Kunstof in Vienna, I've been wanting a vintage persian rug. Because of their geometric designs, I thought it was a real nice way to tie in the something old with all of the modern stuff they had going on. A cute little boutique hotel outside the city center, Kunstof ("art house") had changing installations of local artists. I loved the knit cozies for the columns in the lobby and especially the stag craddling a baby...the receptionist couldn't remember the artist's name.

Anyway, ebay has some pretty cheap rugs, like this runner that I want to put in my hallway. It goes for $230 and is 3'4"x9'11 handmade in Iran.

Traveler's Joy

My friends Shelby and Paddy are celebrating their marriage in May and are traveling to Southeast Asia for their honeymoon. Instead of a traditional registry, they went to travler'sjoy.com where the bride and groom register for the honeymoon of their dreams. Basically, you can buy activities like a couples massage or champagne by the pool. Not only do I fully support the gift of travel and pampering, but I was psyched about the prices which were very affordable! I want to buy them Vietnamese cooking class which goes for only $55!!!

Trend Alert...scarf on ankle

I couldn't find any picture, and I haven't had a camera on me when I noticed two different people wearing bandanas around their ankles. Its a good way to do something new with the scarf. I give it a thumbs up. I also give it a few months to reach the masses a la the balenciaga "kifyia."

T

you know i love t-shirts. I've been all over print liberation's political Ts, live in my american apparel deep v t virtually all weekend every weekend, have recently taken my four different urban renewal Ramones t-shirts out of retirement (again), and wear my Clu when I want to feel like I need to try a little bit. That's why i can't wait for Alexander Wang's T line. I viewed the collection back in september, and loved their easy simple sexiness. Though they're probably better suited for a skinny model's body (think Erin Wasson, not Becky's TV), I'm psyched to finally be able to wear something super comfy to work in the spring. They retail around $80...which I think is a steal. Especially if you employ the math of my co-worker, Nicole, who divides the retail price by the amount of times she'll wear something to determine to overall value.

Why couldn't I have been Tavi when I was twelve?

I came across Tavi while reading my friend Laia's blog. I couldn't tell if she was a real life twelve year old, or a seasoned fashion industry professional who happened to suffer from dwarfism. Teen vogue verified that she is, in fact, twelve years old as they named her "blogger of the moment." I mean, isn't she technically a tween, disqualifying her from the blogger of the moment award?
Srsly, not only does this girl have the fashion sense to outcool a bar full of hipsters any day, but she has the most hilariously dry writing style to boot. AND, she knows her fashion shit. AND she plays guitar and loves music more than she loves fashion. She is so pretty, too...this girl is going to grow up to be a total rock star.
Is it fair to be so jealous of a 7th grader? Honestly, as I am writing this, I am beginning to think her older damn-the-man teenage sibling is just dressing Tavi up in random articles of clothing, making a mockery of all of us "serious" fashion bloggers.
still jealous.

High School Studs

While "windows" shopping at Topshop (actually, I have a Mac) I came across these studded booties.

Which reminded me how much I loved the High School Musical photoshoot that Elle did a few months back.

My other girl crush, Vanessa Hudgens, wears the original Guccis which I'm sure "inspired" the Topshop version.

This years Rock & Romantic trend tied in perfectly with the Grease inspired theme of the shoot. In addition to the boots, I especially loved the Cavalli floral print dress the Tis wore.

odileodette

So, I finally succamb to the pressure and joined Facebook the other day. Its kind of amazing and a little bit scary how much information you find about former classmates. A pleasant surprise, though, was a discovery I made about Steph Bodnar, a former classmate who I never really knew was into fashion back in the day. She and her business partner are being honored in San Francisco's Gen Art Fresh Faces of Fashion on October 30th. I am feeling a Romy and Michelle moment here, where I am the fat knocked up cheerleader, Christie, who has accomplished nothing with her life. Just kidding, I wasn't that mean; I get to be Lisa a fringe a-lister who was the associate fashion editor at Vogue. Anyway, congrats Odileodette!

ummmm...net-a-porter recently uploaded these booties from Stella McCartney. Dare I say I like these even better than the patent pumps I posted about a few days ago?

Palienated

Like most people, I first heard about Gov. Sarah Palin a little less than two months ago. I remember watching CNN in my hotel room in Vienna and thinking I might never want to come back to the good old USA. That is to say, i instantly loved her. Love to hate her, I mean.
Thats why I really want this t-shirt from print liberation

Warsaw

Last night I went to Vagabond, where my friend Elsa had a trunkshow for her line of bags called Warsaw. Not only do I love the logo, but all of the bags are super utilitarian. I bought a tote bag so now I can stop carrying my lunch in my sponge bob bag.

Lazy Days

Today I was so lazy. As you can see, I spent much of the day in front of this computer. When I am too lazy to think about my appearance (which is almost anyday, actually) these are my favorite make-me-feel-decent-with-minimal-effort products. Most of them i use everyday regardless of my motivation, or lack thereof.

rosebud minted lip salve -the best textured balm i have ever tried
comme des garcons odeur 53 eau de toilette -clean, crisp, unique
american apparel deep v tee in heather grey -comfy, casual, sexy
dior hydrating skin tint SPF 20- moisturizing, sheer coverage, and most importantly protects my skin
victorias secret wireless ipex bra- comfort with clevage
secret original shower fresh- i've been using this since i was 12. fresh, clean, not overpowering.
frizz ease -smooths out the fly aways and saves me time in the shower when i can't condition

Popomomo

Congrats to my friend, Lizz, of one of my daily reads Material Concern. In a GenArt event hosted tonight in LA by Maggie Gyllenhaal (girl crush!), Lizz's clothing line, Popomomo, is one of four featured up and coming lines that use organic and or sustainable materials. Yay Popomomo for being green! check out info on the event here. Lizz's blog here. and Popomomo here.

Today's Purchase

this cropped blazer from Urban Outfitters.

its about time..

during market week a few weeks back, I went with the Petulia's Folly buyer to check out the spring lines. We came across Etten Eller, a new jewlery line designed by artist Christina Bloom. Inspired by her grandfather's collection of vintage time peices, she fashions her necklaces out of watch parts. My favorite item, not shown here, consists of two delicate gold chains off of which several tiny tiny watch hands dangle from. Read more about the line here

Its raining its pouring

I hate to admit how much I really love stella mccartney. One of my all time favorite teachers was named Ebru Ercon, who was an indie designer in London at the time i studied there. She went to central St. Martin's with Stella, and said while everyone else had to use their friends as models, Stella used her connections to get people like Naomi or something. I got curious what my old teach was up to and I dug something up on her that lead me to believe she now designs for Adidas by Stella McCartney. Anyway, my point is, I really like this slicker by Stella McCartney for Adidas.

New Headband, New Post

i needed something to blog about so I made this headband.
scott collects the beer bottles in the background...he never went to college until now, and though I always loathed the "i am real cool cause i've tried all these beers isn't it cool to be an underage beer drinker" display above the cupboards, i chalk it up to all part of the experience and let him go with it. at least there are no natty ice cans.
i also made the nudie magnets on the fridge...the pics are from a vintage "Oui" magazine i bought along the Seine in gay paris.

Me as Betty

one time my lesbian friend told me she never heard the term "girl crush" I guess for her it was too literal or something. I tried to explain that its not really that you want to be WITH your girl crush, just that you want to be exactly like your girl crush. She still didn't get it.

Megawords

so Scott's BF, Melissa was having some "art show" or "architecture show" tonight...he obviously did get the details. After driving around various parts of the city for 45 minutes due to the amazingly inaccurate event flier, we arrived at the Megawords "storefront." Oh, I thought to myself, I think I read about this, but all i could remember was the concept reminded me of the Comme Des Garcons Guerilla storefront concept. As it turns out, MEGAWORDS is a "Philly based non-commercial magazine" that "explores the modern urban environment and the establishment of an open and active dialogue between the magazine and the community at large." The "storefront" (i quote because the store is also more or less non-commercial) is a month long project with rotating installations, etc. The collection of zines, which I think you CAN actually buy, was really nice to pick through. I also picked up the latest issue of Megawords with some really pretty pictures of Chincoteague.

The Rachel Zoe Project -and remember the "e" is silent

my friend turned me onto surfthechannel.com, where tons of TV shows are available for free download...not sure if its legal or not, but who cares, I can't afford cable. Anyway, I am loving the Rachel Zoe Project. Forget Rachel Zoe -her assistant "Tay" is the bitch. Rachel Zoe seems a lot smarter than perez ever made her out to be and her goofy husband is kind of growing on me too. Anyway, I loved this outfit she wore with wide leg jeans, a peasantly blouse with full sleeves, and a short sleeve fur jacket over top. Wish it was faux, though. PETA needs to give her a call. or a splash of red paint. or whatever it is they do. but please don't boycott the show, i need to see wether or not they fire Brad.

Rammed at the last second

I am going through an ebay phase right now with vintage costume jewelry. I was at a party, then an art opening, but made sure I came home to bid on this super cool faux-bone ram head thing pendant. I was super psyched to be the high bidder until at the very last second someone out bid me!!! I hope every time the new owner looks at this necklace, she is reminded that a ram is a symbol for an awful personality trait called stubborness, and maybe next time she will let the right person win.

Pure Goldette

I got turned on to costume jewelry from the Carole Tanenbaum pieces we carry at Petulia's Folly. I've scoured e-bay and found some choice pieces from Goldette, a well known costume jeweler from the 60's. This one I am particularly lusting after is a perfume compact pendant...as my Aunt Patty would say "ooh la la"

Cocquilletail Ring

This is the cocktail ring I bought the other day. To me, the gold part looks like it was cast from a shell. If you know your French, "cocquille" is french for shell. ...it took a few minutes, but once again i have thought of a wonderful pun as post heading.

Probst!

By the way, sorry I've been absent. I went to Europe for a while and didn't really know where to begin until today when I got excited about some rings. I am eventually going to upload some stuff from my travels to my sister blog, Becky's Tv Travels....that is if I can remember my password/\

Holy Trinity

I am obsessed with cocktail rings lately thanks to all the Pade Vavra we get at Petulia's Folly. Today I bought a vintage faux pearl ring from the Antiquarian in Philly. And two seconds ago I purchased three cocktail rings from old navy...they were super cheap! I can't wait to get them in the mail!

Thigh Rub

in honor of my friend, Heather, who is staying with me this week, I would like to post about one of my favorite products, Silky Underwear Dusting Powder from Lush. Chunky thighed girls know all about "chub rub" as Heather and I like to call it...where the bare skin of your inner thighs chafe when you wear a dress without any tights. It stings really bad and can really prevent you from enjoying a day of shopping. Thats why I love this powder. Although not long lasting, i dust this on my fatties to eliminate friction. This talc free powder has tiny granules of coco butter that somehow moisturizes and dries at the same time. Also great for smelly feet.

Studded with envy

A beautiful girl came into Petulia's Folly the other day donning this covetable Burberry studded Knight Bag. I swear she was the model Free People often uses for their catalog. Both the bag and the girl are more beautiful in person.

Score

the weirdest fashion moment happened today. Yesterday, I spent $277 at Anthropologie, but decided to take back the two items i bought b/c it seemed like too much. Before I left, i was browsing around Myspace, where my friend Laia posted about her blog, geometric sleep being featured on ELLE. I noticed some amazing pair of shoes she had on and was thinking to myself "I also need an amazing pair of shoes"
So, I left, returned my items, and then went to Joan Shepp where I scored by finding these amazing dries van noten lace up platforms for only $150...thats right...these suckers originally cost $795!!!!
Anyway, I just sat down to blog about my find and while prowling the web for a pic of them. The only pics I could find of the plum color which I purchased happened to be on Geometric Sleep! It turns out Laia has been pining after these shoes for months......she is going to be so jealous of my find!

Fashion Tribes

A few months ago, bloggers posted some pics of designers unknown to me, Stella Valentic & Julie Kéchichian from the Hyeres Festival. I was immediate drawn to their heavily beaded t-shirt dressings inspired by the african Ndebele people. Since EVERYBODY is doing ethnic these days, I kinda forced myself to forget about them.
However, I stumbled upon these Muany pillows at anthropologie a few weeks ago, and I kept visiting them, deciding wether or not I am really over the whole ethnic trend.
well, it turns out I am not. I decided they are actually going to be perfect for Scott's & My new apartment. My new purchase inspired me to go through stylebubble's archives and re-discover S&J's work.

Inferior Vena Cava

someone over at Old Navy was just as much a fan of Vena Cava's border print from their fall '07 collection as I was. Despite the obvious KO (knock-off), I bought the dress, because, hey, I only have to work one night at the art museum to pay for it, instead of like, two whole months for the original.

Come Fly with Me

I've noticed a very interesting silhouette re-occurring on the runways. The belted dress with what I describe as fly-aways at the side. We carried the sawtooth belted dress from Rachel Comey at Petulia's Folly, where I first took notice. Of course, McQueen's butterfly dress has been getting a lot of blog press, but thought "hmmm...that shape looks very familiar". Then, while browsing Christian Dior's resort collection on style.com I found this similar version. I'm guessing this shape comes from something vintage, but I've never seen it before.

Model Dog

I wanted to show you the oversized studded faux wood cuff I bought from Banana Republic yesterday. I am always scouring their sale jewelry and usually find something cool and cheap. Scott said I looked like a "demented S&M" which is what our 8th grade science teacher called him when he wore a dog collar around his neck. And the fact that I made my dog, Finn, wear it in this pic instead of me has less to do with that statement than it does with the fact that I couldn't take a picture off the bracelet on me without my arm looking chubb.

Twin Power!

Just before Christmas, the cutest set of twin sisters came in to Petulia's Folly with their dad. They mentioned they had a jewelry line, and were of course wearing some of their pieces. I didn't particularly take notice that day. However, a few weeks later I was in Boston shopping in a store called Stel's on Newbury St and I immediately recognized some of the jewelry they carried as the twins'. It turns out the line is Lizzie Fortunato...designed by Lizzie, but the business end is handled by her twin sister, Kathryn. I love how Lizzie mixes textiles and tassels with found objects and beautiful semi-precious stones. Since January, I keep revisiting their site and one day hope to own a few pieces. And since I am a twin myself, I doubly support the collaboration!!

Perfumania

I have always been an avid fan of perfume. Up until a few years ago, when I discovered Commes des Garcons Odeur 53, I would by a different perfume every year and wear that scent daily. Now I ONLY wear Odeur 53, though I had such diffecult time finding a new bottle in January when my old bottle ran out. While window shopping at candystorecollective.com I came across Yosh a San Fransisco based perfume line by Yosh Han. I love her philosophy and also her lableless, minimalistic packaging. I found her Sweet Suite sampler set on luckyscent.com and i am so curious think I may just treat myself. Just in case I'm not happy with Yosh, I can always stick to old faithful, as it looks like luckyscents has plenty of Odeur 53 in stock.

new hair

i'm so tired of my long hair. for a while I've wanted the haircut that my brothers had in fourth grade...the skater cut i think they called it. I imagine i'd look like i had selma blair's haircut as pictured
